Is Car Insurance Required In Virginia? 

Virginia law mandates that drivers must have minimum liability insurance coverage to drive in the state legally, with little exception. This requirement aims to ensure financial responsibility in case of accidents.

Virginia drivers may choose not to carry insurance; in this situation, you are required to pay an annual uninsured motor vehicle fee to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to drive legally. However, this fee does not provide any insurance coverage and is not a substitute for liability insurance. For that reason, securing adequate protection for yourself and vehicle is strongly recommended.
