Medigap Insurance Information
Navigating the healthcare landscape can be challenging, especially when securing additional coverage for the gaps in Medicare. Medigap plans can provide optional coverage to help cover out-of-pocket health care expenses.

What Does Medigap Cover?
Medigap is supplemental insurance designed to help you pay for healthcare costs that Medicare doesn’t cover, which may include the following:
- Copayments
- Coinsurance
- Deductibles
- Medical services when you travel outside the United States
Various standardized Medigap plans are available, each offering different levels of coverage. Some may provide additional benefits, like coverage for excess charges or preventive care, but they won’t cover services such as long-term care, vision, dental, hearing aids or private nursing.
Who Qualifies for Medigap?
To be eligible for Medigap, there are specific requirements you must meet:
- You must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B.
- If you’re under 65, eligibility rules can vary by state, and not all states require companies to offer Medigap plans to beneficiaries under 65.
The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your 6-month Medigap open enrollment period, which starts the month you turn 65 as soon as you are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in your state, regardless of health conditions.
Who Offers Medigap Plans?
Private insurance companies offer Medigap plans, so you’ll pay a monthly premium in addition to the premium for Medicare Part B. Each standard Medigap policy must offer the same basic benefits, regardless of who sells it. However, companies might offer it at different prices and include additional benefits.

It’s crucial to compare Medigap policies carefully, as costs can vary even for the same coverage. Not every insurance provider offers all types of Medigap plans. Shopping around can make a significant difference in both your coverage and costs.
